Tokayev called Putin the most acceptable political figure for the world

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that he considers Russian dictator Vladimir Putin an “outstanding statesman” and the most acceptable political figure for Central Asia, Europe, and the world. He made these remarks at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin.

Tokayev noted that he has “very good relations” with Putin and thanked him for understanding Kazakhstan’s position on the war in Ukraine.

At the same time, the Kazakhstani president emphasized that Astana supports the territorial integrity of states and adheres to the provisions of the UN Charter. He also expressed respect for the Ukrainian people, their history, culture, traditions, and language.

Regarding ending the war, Tokayev stated that, in his view, an immediate cessation of hostilities is unrealistic under current conditions. Instead, he proposed first freezing hostilities and then moving on to diplomatic negotiations.

Tokayev also emphasized that Kazakhstan seeks to maintain relations with both Russia and Ukraine. Among the factors influencing Astana’s relations with Moscow, he cited the 7,597-kilometer shared border and the fact that approximately 2.7 million ethnic Russians live in Kazakhstan.
