Last year, sea surface temperatures in Europe reached record levels, according to climatologists

According to data from last year, sea surface temperatures in Europe reached their highest level on record. This is reported by climatologists, who note these record-breaking figures.

This is stated in a press release from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) based on the report “State of the European Climate in 2025.”

“Annual sea surface temperatures in the European region were the highest on record, with 86% of the region experiencing at least ‘severe’ marine heatwaves,” the WMO reported.

Glaciers in all European regions experienced net mass loss, with Iceland recording the second-largest glacier loss on record.

“Snow cover was 31% below average; the Greenland ice sheet lost 139 gigatons (139 billion tons) of ice,” the organization added.

In addition, over the first 11 months of last year, 70% of rivers across Europe had below-average flow.

It is also reported that wildfires destroyed approximately 1,034,550 hectares, the largest area on record.

“Storms and floods affected thousands of people across Europe, although extreme precipitation and flooding were less widespread than in recent years,” the WMO added.

In 2025, temperatures above the annual average were recorded across 95% of Europe.

2026 could become one of the hottest years on record.

Since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, at least 127 incidents posing risks to nuclear and radiation safety have been recorded. Energy and nuclear facilities were most frequently targeted. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant accounted for the largest number of incidents.
