The U.S. House of Representatives approved the bill by a vote of 262 to 0. The bill calls for the imposition of sanctions and tariffs against Russia and its allies.
According to The Wall Street Journal, U.S. President Donald Trump plans to sign Senator Lindsey Graham’s bill on sanctions against Russia after it is approved by the House of Representatives.
Representative Michael McCaul (R-TX), the bill’s sponsor, argued that passing the bill before winter is important, as it puts pressure on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and his allies before Russia can strike at civilian infrastructure.
“This will hit them where it really hurts and provide the necessary leverage to force Putin to the negotiating table. It will also put pressure on China to force Putin to the negotiating table, since they too will be affected by these tariffs,” McColl said.
Meanwhile, Gregory Mix, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, expressed skepticism about whether the bill would achieve its goal.
“It grants President Trump broad new powers over tariffs and allows him to lift the very sanctions that, as claimed, he intends to impose—sanctions he could have imposed today but chose not to do so over the past 19 months,” he noted.
Sources reported that the White House pressured Republican leadership in the House of Representatives to push this bill forward.
