Trump joked about a third term in the White House
U.S. President Donald Trump joked during a dinner with journalists that he might run for president a third time. At the same time, he immediately clarified that this was just a joke and not a statement about his actual plans. Under the U.S. Constitution, the president cannot serve more than two terms.
U.S. President Donald Trump once again raised the possibility of a third term as head of state. This time, he did so in a lighthearted manner during the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents’ Association. Speaking about the event’s rescheduling from April to July 24, Trump decided to joke about his own presidency. “The second time is great. Just like with my presidential term, the second time is always better. Yes, the second time always turns out better. And the third time will be even better,” said the U.S. leader.
Trump then added that his words should not be taken seriously. “I’m just joking,” the U.S. president noted.
What is known about the possibility of a third term
Despite the joke, this isn’t the first time Trump has brought up the topic of a possible third presidency. He has previously raised this possibility in his speeches, even though U.S. law imposes clear restrictions. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, adopted in 1951, prohibits a president from serving more than two terms. Trump is currently in his second presidential term, which is set to end in January 2029.
He first took office in 2017 and served as U.S. president until 2021. After losing the 2020 election, he re-entered the presidential race and won the 2024 election. Despite Trump’s numerous statements about a “third term,” significant amendments to the U.S. Constitution would be required for this to happen, as current rules do not allow it. The U.S. leader made these remarks at a dinner hosted by the White House Correspondents’ Association.
