Trump Promoted Economic Policies in Michigan Amid Falling Approval Ratings
U.S. President Donald Trump spoke Monday at a General Motors plant in Michigan, where he highlighted the successes of his economic policies. The visit took place amid a decline in his approval rating in the state, which is of significant political and economic importance, according to Al Jazeera English.
Trump stated that the U.S. is building more auto plants and industrial facilities than ever before in its history. At the same time, the White House is reporting billions in investments in Michigan’s economy, including the expansion of production facilities by the country’s three largest automakers—General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis.
An EPIC-MRA poll conducted last month put Trump’s approval rating in Michigan at 33%. In the 2024 presidential election, he won the state with 49.73% of the vote. David Duliu, a professor of political science at Oakland University, attributed the president’s decline in popularity primarily to the economic situation. According to him, voters are more concerned about gas and food prices than about large-scale investment announcements.

Michigan is an important industrial state and one of the main hubs for trade between the U.S. and Canada. The Trump administration’s trade war with Canada has created uncertainty in the state. Duliu also noted that rising gas prices, uncertainty surrounding tariffs, and the conflict with Iran are influencing voter sentiment. Last year, the United Auto Workers union, which has traditionally supported Democrats and criticized Trump, reacted favorably to his auto tariffs.
Federal employment data does not yet indicate significant rapid job growth in the manufacturing sector: in May, the sector lost 2,000 jobs, and in June, it added 3,000. In November, Michigan will also hold a U.S. Senate election to fill the seat of retiring Democrat Gary Peters. Republican Mike Rogers will face the winner of the Democratic primary—Congresswoman Haley Stevens or public health expert Abdul El-Sayed. Trump’s low approval rating in Michigan is also significant given the state’s status, which could influence the 2028 presidential election.
