Trump Brushes Off Questions Over Constitutionality of Venezuela Operation
US President Donald Trump has said in an interview that he is not automatically backing Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. He noted that Venezuela has a vice president and said he is waiting to see whether figures in any emerging government remain loyal to Nicolás Maduro or align with the United States.
As questions grow in Washington over the constitutionality of the operation in Venezuela, Trump appeared to dismiss those concerns, saying he had “no problem” with the action and arguing that many critics — largely Democrats, in his view — should be “saying great job rather than complaining.”
Analysts warn that constitutional challenges are likely and may ultimately reach the US Supreme Court. Trump acknowledged that the military phase of events may now be ending, but said the real test begins with the political aftermath in a post-Maduro landscape — one in which, he suggested, the United States now carries significant responsibility because of its actions in recent hours.
