Trump Will Determine Oil Sanctions Against Russia Based on Market Prices — Rubio

The U.S. has stated that the future of temporary exemptions from sanctions against Russian oil will depend on the situation in the global energy market. The final decision on whether to extend or roll back these exemptions will be made by President Donald Trump.

A key factor will be the trend in oil prices, which, according to Washington’s assessment, currently provide more leeway for political decisions without the risk of severe economic consequences.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during a visit to Kuwait that the issue of temporary exemptions from sanctions against Russian oil is not automatically extended and will be considered in the context of the global situation in the energy markets. According to him, Washington is closely monitoring changes in oil prices, as these determine how stringent further measures can be without risking the destabilization of the global economy.

Rubio emphasized that all previous exemptions were temporary and were introduced primarily to avoid sharp price spikes and inflationary pressure. He also noted that the current decline in oil prices gives the U.S. greater political and economic room to maneuver. “Perhaps. This is a decision the president will make as the expiration date [of these measures] approaches,” Rubio said, commenting on the prospect of extending or lifting the restrictions. He added that the administration will not make any final decisions in advance, as market conditions may change.

Separately, the Secretary of State noted that the drop in oil prices reduces risks to the U.S. economy, particularly regarding inflation. According to him, market conditions will be the key guide for the White House in shaping future policy regarding Russian energy resources. “Future market dynamics will be a key factor in decision-making,” Rubio concluded, emphasizing that the final decision will rest with the U.S. president. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made these remarks during a visit to Kuwait.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also serves as the White House National Security Advisor, will conduct an official tour of the Middle East from June 23 to 25.
