Trump announced a pardon for eight women sentenced to death in Iran
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the commutation of the death sentences of eight Iranian women who participated in mass protests.
The president wrote about this on his social media platform Truth Social, noting that four of them should be released immediately, while the other four should remain in custody for one month. Trump thanked Iran’s leadership for heeding his call, which he had made public the day before as a condition for the successful start of future negotiations between the two countries.
The Iranian side had previously officially denied the existence of death sentences against the eight women in question, calling the reports from U.S. authorities “fake news.” However, human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have confirmed that following the January 2026 protests in Iran, at least several dozen people faced the death penalty due to expedited trials. According to Trump, saving the lives of the female protesters is a critically important step toward unblocking diplomatic dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
Earlier, Trump askedIran to release eight women scheduled for execution.
Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict between the U.S. and Iran are at risk of collapse due to the American leader’s public actions.
Trump has expressed his willingness to meet personally with Iran’s new leadership.
