Turkey is preparing to sell the S-400 in order to have U.S. sanctions lifted

Turkey is preparing to sell the S-400 in order to have U.S. sanctions lifted

Ankara has agreed to sell Russian S-400 air defense missile systems to one of the Persian Gulf countries. This move is expected to help lift U.S. sanctions and restore full-scale defense cooperation between Turkey and the United States.

The decision on the deal is expected to be officially announced in the near future. The United Arab Emirates and Qatar are cited as the most likely buyers of the Russian air defense systems.

As the publication notes, the sale of the S-400s is directly linked to negotiations between Turkey and the U.S. regarding the lifting of sanctions imposed following the purchase of the Russian systems in 2019.

According to Hürriyet, Washington has presented Ankara with three key demands: not to use the S-400 systems, to completely relinquish ownership of them, and to refrain from further military-technical cooperation with Russia in this area.

It is expected that fulfilling these conditions will allow Turkey to unblock defense projects with the U.S., in particular to return to the fifth-generation F-35 fighter jet program, from which it was suspended following the purchase of Russian air defense systems.
