Two suspects detained in Bangladesh over murder of family of four

Police in the city of Rangpur, Bangladesh, have detained two men in connection with the murder of a family of four in their home. According to NDTV World, the bodies of 65-year-old former teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his 50-year-old wife Pritilata, their 23-year-old daughter Agami Chakraborty Prathi, and their 12-year-old son Priyam were found in the locked house on Saturday.

Police said the victims’ faces had been burned with a flammable substance. Nineteen-year-old Siddhartha Das and 23-year-old Mugdha Das were detained in the case. Law enforcement officials describe them as maternal cousins and neighbors of the family.

Police version

According to investigators, late on Thursday evening, the two suspects climbed onto the roof of the family’s two-story home in the Machuapara area to use yaba, a methamphetamine-based drug. Hearing a noise, Ganapati Chakraborty went upstairs to check what was happening. According to police, he was allegedly strangled with a towel he had with him.

Ganapati Chakraborty’s wife followed him to the roof and, according to law enforcement officials, was killed on the stairs. The family’s daughter left her room because of the noise; police say she was strangled with a rope after several minutes of struggle. According to investigators, the younger son was killed out of fear that he could identify the attackers.

Actions after the killings

Rangpur Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said that, according to the investigation’s assessment, the suspects remained in the house throughout the night. He said they left on Friday during Juma prayers, when there were fewer people on the streets.

Police said the men allegedly bathed in the house, ate dates and cucumbers from the refrigerator, and used drugs found on the table. According to investigators, before leaving, they scattered items from wardrobes and drawers, stole gold jewelry, and submerged two of the family’s mobile phones in water with detergent. Law enforcement officials said they recovered the stolen jewelry, are conducting DNA testing on date seeds found in the house, and that the detainees confessed to the killings.
