A forest fire in Belgium’s largest nature reserve, Goes-Fenn, continues to spread. Over the past 24 hours, the area affected by the fire has more than doubled, reaching approximately 3,000 hectares.
Overnight, more than 250 firefighters and rescue workers were deployed to fight the blaze. However, the rugged terrain is preventing emergency crews from getting close to the fire’s epicenters and using conventional firefighting methods.
Due to the fire, authorities ordered the evacuation of residents from the municipalities of Zurbrodt and Büttgenbach. According to Belgian media reports, this involves approximately 600 people.
Other residents have been advised to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke.
Local authorities warn that the fire has not yet been brought under control and the flames could spread to residential areas.
The fire in Goes-Fenn is already being called the largest in Belgium’s modern history.
