A 55-year-old man is set to stand trial in Berlin after living in a hotel with his family for a year without paying, racking up a debt of around 100,000 euros. According to investigators, he feigned serious illnesses, including cancer, to avoid paying for his stay.
According to the investigation, in April 2023, he checked into a hotel in the Treptow-Köpenick district of the capital with his partner and two children.
To gain the management’s trust and check in without prepayment, the man claimed that his mobile home had burned down and that he himself had cancer. Additionally, he assured them that all accommodation costs would later be fully covered by an automobile club.
In reality, the fraudster had no intention of paying the bills from the very beginning. The family lived comfortably in the hotel until August 2024, after which they simply left.
When the administration tallied the costs, it turned out that the total amount for their stay exceeded 100,000 euros.
In March 2026, the perpetrator was finally arrested. According to the prosecutor’s office, the pretrial detention order against him has since been lifted, and the criminal case has been transferred to the district court of Berlin’s Tiergarten district.
