Twenty people were injured in a tram accident in Berlin
A major traffic accident involving public transportation occurred in eastern Berlin, leaving 20 people injured. The accident took place in the Lichtenberg district, where one of the tram cars derailed while navigating a curve.
According to preliminary reports from local fire department officials, the accident occurred because part of the tram likely collided with a massive overhead power line support while maneuvering through the turn.
The force of the impact was so powerful that it completely crushed the right side of the vehicle, after which the last car finally derailed. Emergency services arrived promptly at the scene, including nearly 60 firefighters and medical personnel who provided first aid to the passengers.
As a result of the incident, 20 people sustained injuries of varying severity. Three passengers are in critical condition, and most of the 17 people who sustained minor injuries were also hospitalized at local hospitals for thorough medical examination. The Berlin Public Transport Company (BVG) dispatched the head of its specialized emergency response team to the accident site, who promptly cut off power to the area. Due to the cleanup of the accident and the lengthy process of evacuating the damaged car, tram service on the popular M5 and M17 lines was temporarily suspended, and bus routes were organized as a replacement for passengers.
