In Bolivia, adviser to President Paz remanded in attempted femicide case

A court in the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra ordered 180 days of pretrial detention for Fernando Gabriel Serimedo, who is described as an adviser to President Rodrigo Paz. Prosecutors charged him with attempted femicide following a shooting in which lawyer Nadia Beller was injured.

As The Rio Times reports, Beller is Serimedo's former partner. She survived the attack, remains under medical supervision, and filed the complaint that initiated the criminal proceedings.

Shooting near a hotel

According to prosecutors, on August 17, 2026, two armed men on a motorcycle who posed as couriers opened fire near the Swissôtel hotel. The attack took place in the area of the Isuto Canal and the fifth ring of Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

The prosecution's case materials state that Beller suffered gunshot wounds. The suspected perpetrators of the attack, according to prosecutor Yolanda Aguilera, have not yet been detained. At the same time, one person is in custody to help establish the shooters' whereabouts, but that person's name and role in the case have not been disclosed.

Detention and preventive measure

Serimedo was detained on the morning of August 18 at Viru Viru International Airport as he was about to board a plane. Before that, he had arrived in Santa Cruz de la Sierra from La Paz.

The court also ordered that Serimedo be transferred to Palmasola prison for the duration of the investigation. During the hearing, he exercised his right not to testify. Prosecutors allege that Serimedo may have ordered and coordinated the attack, but this is the prosecution's version, not a fact established by a court. There has been no verdict in the case, and a trial date has not yet been set.
