UK authorities are investigating Telegram over concerns about risks to children
In the UK, an investigation has been launched into the Telegram messaging app over the possible dissemination of child sexual abuse material. The regulator states that it has received relevant evidence from an international organization. Several other online platforms are also under scrutiny. This is according to a statement from the UK regulator.
In the UK, the communications regulator Ofcom has launched an investigation into the Telegram messaging app. The reason is a suspicion that material related to child sexual abuse may have been distributed on the platform. The agency reported that it received evidence from the Canadian Centre for Child Protection. This evidence served as the basis for launching the official investigation.
The regulator emphasizes that it has already contacted the companies, but is not satisfied with the level of child protection on the platforms. Therefore, the investigation is now entering a more rigorous phase.
At the same time, Ofcom has opened cases against other sites—Teen Chat and Chat Avenue. They are examining whether these companies have fulfilled their obligations to protect children from the risk of harassment. “These companies must do more to protect children, or they face serious consequences under the Online Safety Act,” said Ofcom spokesperson Susanna Keater.
This refers to new rules in effect in the UK that require online platforms to more actively combat harmful content. If companies fail to comply with these requirements, they may face fines or other penalties.
The investigation is currently ongoing. Ofcom emphasizes that its goal is to determine whether the platforms have done enough to protect children and whether they are complying with the law.
