The Bundestag called for preparations to be made for Putin's trial
A member of the Bundestag stated that the international community must be prepared for a possible trial of Vladimir Putin.
According to him, establishing a special tribunal to address the crime of aggression against Ukraine is an important tool for exerting political pressure on Russia. Furthermore, this would help preserve evidence and lay the legal groundwork for potentially holding the Russian leader accountable.
"This will largely depend on how the situation in Russia develops. There have been cases in history where dictators and war criminals have stood trial before international courts. Whether this will happen in Putin’s case will depend on events in Russia and on the resolve of the international community,” said Wagener, responding to a question about whether he believes Putin could end up in the dock.
According to him, the very fact of establishing such a tribunal is significant, as it increases political pressure and demonstrates that the most serious violations of international law will not go unpunished.
“That is precisely why it is important to collect and preserve evidence—both of the regime’s crimes and of the crimes committed by specific war criminals at all levels. We must be prepared in case Putin himself can be brought to trial,” the lawmaker emphasized.
Robin Wagener, chair of the German-Ukrainian Parliamentary Group and a member of the Bundestag from the “Alliance ’90/The Greens” party, made these remarks in an interview with Ukrinform.
