Dubai Fountain shows suspended during mourning period — The National

In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, daily Dubai Fountain shows have been suspended for the 10-day mourning period following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the younger brother of Dubai’s ruler and UAE Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. As The National reports, a Dubai Mall customer service representative confirmed that the attraction in Downtown Dubai will not operate during the mourning period.

Mourning until September 30

Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum died on September 21, Dubai’s media office reported. The 10-day mourning period in the emirate began on Monday and will last until Wednesday, September 30. Flags on Dubai government buildings have been lowered to half-mast.

Sheikh Ahmed was deputy chairman of Dubai Police, chairman of ARM Holding Group and president of Al Wasl Sports Club. UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed condolences to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and noted the deceased’s contribution to the development of the Emirates.

Fountain operations

During official mourning in the UAE, live entertainment events are usually suspended. Radio stations may replace regular programming with prayers or Quran recitations, while concerts and official events are sometimes cancelled or postponed.

Dubai Fountain is located on Burj Lake between Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa. The fountain resumed operations in October 2025 after a five-month renovation, during which its choreography, sound and lighting systems were upgraded. It usually hosts daytime performances, while evening shows take place every 30 minutes from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
