The EU has agreed on new rules for deporting migrants – Politico

EU member states have agreed on legislative changes designed to speed up deportations and increase their number, in particular by allowing rejected asylum seekers to be sent to centers outside the European Union.

This decision is part of sweeping reforms the EU is implementing to tighten control over asylum seekers and to support countries that receive the largest number of external migrants.

The agreement was reached just a few days before other migration reforms take effect on June 12.

This decision will help the EU regain control over “who enters the European Union, but also who must leave it,” said Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner.

“We must restore people’s sense that we are in control of what is happening,” the official said.

According to him, only 27 percent of rejected asylum seekers actually leave the EU.

Under the agreement, countries will be allowed to send people who have been ordered to leave the EU to “return centers” outside the bloc.

The text also introduces stricter rules for dealing with migrants deemed a security threat: among other things, it allows for home searches, prolonged detentions, entry bans, and penalties for those who do not cooperate with law enforcement.

“For years, Europe has sent the worst possible signal: even if you had no right to stay, the likelihood that nothing would happen was high. That era is coming to an end. If you have no right to stay in Europe, you will have to leave,” said François-Xavier Bellamy, a French Member of the European Parliament from the European People’s Party.

Under the agreement, parts of the text will not take effect for another year. At the same time, some provisions, including measures allowing countries to establish “return centers,” will take effect immediately—a key development for states already moving forward with their creation, particularly the Netherlands and Germany.

The new rules still need to be approved by the EU Council and the European Parliament.
