In Ghana, 76,635 candidates who qualified for placement in senior high schools after the BECE examination did not receive an automatic placement through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). This was reported by MyJoyOnline.
Placement results
A total of 623,072 candidates took the BECE examination in 2026, of whom 604,567 qualified for placement. After the CSSPS results were released on September 4, 527,932 candidates received automatic placement — 87.32% of those eligible for placement.
At the same time, the system declared 859,828 available places in senior high schools, senior technical schools, and technical and vocational education institutions. According to the outlet, the situation is linked to the concentration of demand on a relatively small number of the most sought-after schools.

Demand for schools
More than 313,000 candidates selected Category A schools as their first priority, although these institutions had slightly more than 76,000 declared places. Meanwhile, Category C schools had more than 468,000 vacancies.
MyJoyOnline also drew attention to the results of the 2026 WASSCE examination. Compared with 2025, performance in core mathematics, integrated science, and social studies improved, while English language results continued to deteriorate.
The outlet raises the question of whether the situation indicates problems with the CSSPS or rather uneven demand for educational institutions, as well as what should happen to candidates who are eligible for secondary education but did not receive automatic placement.
