In Ghana, Appiagyei calls for intervention over nurse's detention — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei appealed to First Lady Lordina Mahama and Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to intervene over the continued detention of senior nurse Salomey Aviti Baffoe. The woman is being held in connection with a case involving the Ghana Jollof TikTok account, MyJoyOnline reports.

Denial of bail

On September 24, the High Court rejected Baffoe's application for bail. The court cited the cyber-related nature of the investigation and the possible risk of influencing witnesses if she were released. At the same time, the court ordered the prosecution to expedite the investigation.

Baffoe, a mother of three, is accused of facilitating the spread of false news. According to the prosecution, she helped Barbara Asantewaa Koduah, whom investigators consider to be the operator of the Ghana Jollof TikTok account, distribute videos and recruit other people to recirculate the content. Investigators also said they had identified financial transactions between the two women.

Defense arguments

The defense insisted that Baffoe be released on bail, citing the presumption of innocence and her responsibilities toward her children. Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah said that one of her children is due to begin senior high school, and that the mother's detention is affecting the child's education.

After the court hearing, Appiagyei said the situation raises concerns because the burden of caring for and educating children falls on women. She called on the first lady and the vice president to take the circumstances of Baffoe's family into account during the further consideration of the case.
