In Ghana, public committee monitored 11 infrastructure projects — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana, in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region, the Social Audit Committee (SAC) monitored 11 healthcare and educational infrastructure projects. Mehoso International Foundation Executive Director Thomas Benarkuu said the monitoring helped identify shortcomings during project implementation and prompted responsible bodies to take corrective action, MyJoyOnline reports.
Monitoring local projects
Benarkuu spoke about the committee's work in Tanoso during a visit by a GIZ delegation and other partners. They assessed the impact of SAC's activities and how public monitoring can contribute to accountability, project quality and local development outcomes.
With financial support from GIZ and partners, Mehoso International Foundation is implementing the Participation, Accountability and Integrity for a Resilient Democracy (PAIReD) programme through SAC. The independent committee, established in 2025, oversees development projects in the Bono and Ahafo regions. Its activities are intended to strengthen citizen participation and accountability, as well as reduce corruption and waste.
The committee has already discussed its findings and actions taken regarding eight of the 11 projects. They include the Tanoso Presbyterian Basic School, whose infrastructure was brought to a condition suitable for learning, according to stakeholders' assessment.

Integration into the municipal system
Benarkuu called on the Tano North Municipal Assembly to formally integrate SAC into its working system. According to him, this should ensure the initiative's sustainability, efficient use of funds and broader resident participation in local governance. He also stressed that oversight should cover the entire project cycle, including procurement, and described the initiative as a model that can be extended to other communities.
Tano North Municipal Coordinating Director Alhaji Abubakari Musa said SAC members had gained the knowledge and skills to oversee project implementation. According to him, the assembly has also allocated funds in its 2027 budget for the maintenance of development facilities.
Tanoso Presbyterian Basic School Headmaster Emmanuel Owusu Boadu said infrastructure improvements had helped increase the number of pupils in KG1 and KG2 classes from 20 to 65. He thanked SAC, GIZ and the municipal assembly and appealed for additional support to provide recreational facilities for children.
