Ghana reports possible beating of Bullet TV journalist during demolition works

Reports in Ghana said that Bullet TV journalist Philip Abutiatе was possibly beaten while filming demolition works in Kpeshi on Tuesday, September 15. This was reported in a MyJoyOnline publication.

Safety of media workers

The author of the article notes that the reported case should not be considered isolated. In his view, it raises the issue of the safety of journalists covering demolitions, evictions and other sensitive actions involving government bodies or influential parties.

Journalists inform the public, oversee the activities of authorities and draw attention to matters of public importance, the publication emphasizes. The author believes that intimidation, threats or violence against media workers can undermine press freedom, restrain investigative journalism and hinder coverage of important topics.

Calls to the association and authorities

The author called on the Ghana Journalists Association not to limit itself to publicly condemning the reported incident. In his view, the association should engage with the Ghana Police Service, monitor any potential investigation and seek accountability within legal procedures, as well as provide support to the journalist.

The author also appealed to Ghana's interior minister, police and other state institutions to focus on protecting journalists. He noted that the police should impartially examine the report of an attack, if one was filed, identify those responsible if evidence exists, and ensure due legal process.

The article also discusses the need for protective measures for media representatives working on potentially dangerous assignments. The author stresses that where the involvement of officials, security personnel or private individuals in attacks on journalists is confirmed, appropriate disciplinary or legal measures should be applied.
