Railway workers in Kumasi, Ghana ordered to vacate housing — MyJoyOnline
In Kumasi, Ghana, railway employees and retirees have been given three months to vacate bungalows in the railway enclave of the Adum district. Some residents say they have lived there for more than 30 years and fear being left homeless. This was reported by MyJoyOnline.
The enclave previously served as a residential area for employees of Ghana Railway Corporation, now called Ghana Railway Company Limited. Active employees and company retirees have lived there for years. Red markings and notices bearing the symbols of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly have been placed on old bungalows, some of which are in disrepair, as well as on new wooden structures.
Residents' statements
Emmanuel Kwani Mensah, a former senior sales officer at Ghana Railway Company, said the eviction notice had caused concern among residents. According to him, some workers who retired more than ten years ago have still not received all pension payments due to them from the state.

Mensah also said that some residents have no other housing. Some current and former employees claim that the land plot may have been purchased by a private developer and demand that the authorities explain the status of the land and prevent its private takeover.
City authorities' position
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly confirmed plans to carry out an eviction in the railway enclave but denied selling the land to a private developer. Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi said the assembly cannot sell property belonging to another state institution.
According to the mayor, the decision is linked to a recent fire in the enclave, during which firefighters had difficulty reaching the site of the blaze. Technical specialists advised creating access roads so emergency services could reach the area when needed. Boadi urged residents to leave voluntarily before the three-month deadline expires, warning of forced eviction if they refuse.
