Hong Kong opens lantern carnival featuring 20 countries and regions — ECNS
Hong Kong opened an International Lantern Carnival for the Mid-Autumn Festival in Victoria Park on September 17. The central part of the event was the World Lantern Alley, featuring lanterns from 20 countries and regions, including Brazil, France, India and Thailand, ECNS reports.
More than 3,000 lanterns
More than 3,000 lanterns of various designs were installed at the festival. They showcase folk traditions and festive colors from different countries around the world. One visitor, a man surnamed Yu in his 70s, noted that this year's carnival is larger than previous ones and has more lanterns.

Installation from Nanjing
Another part of the exhibition was an installation of Qinhuai lanterns from Nanjing. The eight-meter structure, placed in the center of the venue, was inspired by a banyan tree. Zhu Mingtao, head of the design department, explained that the banyan symbolizes the roots of one's native land and resonates with the theme of unity.
According to him, Qinhuai lanterns were presented in Hong Kong for the first time. The project team hopes to introduce city residents and guests from different countries to this tradition, which the report describes as national-level intangible cultural heritage. The carnival will run until September 27; performances and festive activities are planned throughout the event.
