In the US, former Peace Institute board asks court to halt Trump inscription — The Hill
Former members of the board of the United States Institute of Peace have filed an emergency motion with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to prevent President Donald Trump’s name from being engraved on the facade of the institution’s headquarters in Washington, United States. Lawyers for the institute’s former leadership claim that the Trump administration intends to carve his name into the building.
As The Hill reports, the applicants are asking the court to make a limited modification to the current stay pending appeal in order to preserve the status quo. In the motion, lawyers said that the possible engraving would cause serious irreparable harm.
Inscription on the building
Trump’s name was already placed on the exterior of the building in December using removable silver letters. At the same time, the name of the United States Institute of Peace is engraved directly on the facade. The Hill contacted the White House to ask whether it plans to engrave the president’s name on the building.

In a court filing, representatives of the former board noted that the headquarters building was funded to a significant extent by private donations to the United States Institute of Peace as a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. According to them, the building’s architecture is intended to symbolize the institution’s independent mission.
Dispute surrounding the institute
The United States Institute of Peace was among the organizations targeted by cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk. This triggered an ongoing legal dispute. The U.S. Congress established the institute in 1984 and allocates federal funds for its programs. The headquarters was built through a combination of private donations and federal funding.
Trump has also sought to add his name to other historic buildings and landmarks in Washington. His actions involving the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts became the subject of legal disputes after he dismissed half of the center’s board, appointed himself its chair, and promoted adding his name to the building. A federal judge on Tuesday blocked this renaming attempt.
