An outbreak of salmonellosis has been reported at a hotel in Chisinau

An outbreak of salmonellosis is being investigated in Chisinau following events held at the Radisson Blu Leogrand Hotel. Twenty-six people have been hospitalized, and the disease has already been confirmed by laboratory tests in 12 of them. Among those who sought medical care are several employees of the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

An outbreak of salmonellosis has occurred in the Moldovan capital, which is linked to people’s stays at the Radisson Blu Leogrand Hotel. Both hotel guests and attendees of events held there in recent days have fallen ill. According to official data, 26 people have been hospitalized with suspected salmonellosis. Laboratory tests have so far confirmed the diagnosis in 12 patients.

The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that several of its employees are among those affected. They participated in events at the hotel and subsequently sought medical attention. Initially, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi had not been present at the event. However, the Israeli Embassy, which had organized an official reception with a buffet at the hotel, later published photos from the event. The Moldovan foreign minister was pictured in them.

Following this, the ministry clarified its statement. “The minister was present at the event but did not eat any food and is feeling well,” the ministry reported after the photos appeared. Experts are currently investigating the exact source of the infection. A special interagency task force has been established in Moldova for this purpose.

Epidemiologists are identifying people who may have come into contact with the infected individuals and are also inspecting food products as well as the conditions under which they were stored and prepared. The investigation is ongoing. The definitive cause of the outbreak will be determined once all laboratory tests and inspections are complete. This was reported by Newsmaker.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu commented on the controversial bill regarding the unification of Moldova and Romania, calling it an attempt to discredit the very idea of unification.
