The fire, which broke out on Saturday in the Porto Germeno area, subsequently spread toward the city of Megara.
Approximately 500 firefighters, 134 fire trucks, and eight specialized aircraft were deployed to extinguish the blaze. International teams also provided assistance—23 firefighters from France and Romania with four fire trucks.
Law enforcement officials detained two people on suspicion of negligence that could have caused the fire. They face criminal charges.
In addition to the large fire near Athens, smaller fires have also been reported in several regions of Greece.
