Gas prices in California have risen to over $6 a gallon due to the war in Iran — Bloomberg

In California, gasoline prices have surpassed $6 per gallon amid a worsening global energy crisis. The rise in fuel costs is attributed to the fallout from the war in Iran, which has impacted global energy markets and put additional pressure on prices.

Bloomberg reports this.

The average price of regular gasoline in the state has risen to $6.01, according to data from the American Automobile Association. This is the highest level since October 2023. No other U.S. state has previously exceeded the $6-per-gallon mark. At the start of the war, the price in California was $4.64 per gallon.

In California—the most populous U.S. state—rising fuel prices are also creating political pressure on Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat considered a potential presidential candidate in 2028.

Meanwhile, the cost of diesel fuel in the state has already broken records, reaching over $7 per gallon.

Fuel supply in California is more complicated than in most other U.S. states. No pipeline delivers fuel here from the Gulf Coast, and since October 2025, two refineries have closed in the state, reducing refining capacity by approximately 20%.

Despite this, prices remain below the historic peak of $6.438 per gallon recorded in June 2022.

As reported, on May 1, oil prices continued to rise as negotiations to resolve the conflict with Iran reached an impasse.

As a reminder, on April 28, the average price of gasoline in the U.S. rose to its highest level in nearly four years following the start of the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran in late February. Gasoline prices at gas stations rose by 7 cents to $4.18 per gallon, marking the largest daily increase in more than a month. Since late February, gasoline has risen by $1.19 per gallon, or more than 40%.

Oil prices fell due to the UAE’s withdrawal from OPEC and tensionssurrounding Iran.

As a reminder, OPEC oil exports plummeted to a record low in March.

Earlier, OPEC+ agreed to a minimally symbolic increase in oil production amid the war in Iran, starting in May 2026.
