In Kyiv, a soldier in the Western Military District threatened to blow up a building and take his own life

In Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, law enforcement officers detained a soldier in a state of mental distress who threatened to blow up an apartment building and commit suicide; the situation was subsequently resolved through negotiations. The incident ended with the man’s detention, and police and the State Emergency Service were on the scene, according to local news outlets.

An incident occurred on Turchyna Street in Kyiv during which a man, who turned out to be a soldier who had deserted his unit, began threatening to blow up a residential building and commit suicide, as reported by local media outlets and law enforcement sources working at the scene.

According to police, the 102 emergency hotline received a call from a resident who stated his intention to turn on the gas in the apartment and blow up the high-rise building, and who was also shouting threats at passersby through the window, prompting an urgent response from police and rescue workers. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers determined that the man was in a state of mental distress; he had stepped out onto the balcony in military uniform, held a knife to his throat, and declared his intention to commit suicide and use grenades if the apartment were stormed, which significantly complicated the situation at the outset.

To resolve the conflict, the head of the district police department entered the apartment and, after brief negotiations, convinced the man to surrender without the use of force, after which he was detained.

Currently, searches are being conducted in the apartment to determine the presence of explosives or weapons, and investigators are clarifying all the circumstances of the incident.

In the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, a Russian Kh-101 missile, which struck a residential high-rise on the night of May 14, pierced the building and detonated on the lowest floor. According to a government official, while clearing the rubble, rescue workers found missile debris in the basement. It was the explosion in this part of the building that caused extensive damage to the reinforced concrete structures and had significant consequences for the building.
