New photos of the suspected WZ-X reconnaissance drone circulated in China
New photographs of a large unmanned aircraft that military aviation observers call the WZ-X were circulated on internet forums in China earlier this month. The images, which reportedly show the aircraft in flight, offer a clearer view of its wing shape, the South China Morning Post reports. The origin of the photos and the location where they were taken have not been independently confirmed.
Signs of a low-observable design
Andreas Rupprecht, a specialist in Chinese military aviation, said the photographs show the clearest image to date of the wing's serrated trailing edge. According to him, this shape is characteristic of aircraft with reduced radar visibility. The expert also suggested that the daytime nature of the flight may indicate that such flights have become more routine.
Rupprecht believes the images show the WZ-X specifically, citing the aircraft's dimensions, proportions and other visible features. Beijing has not publicly confirmed either the drone's designation or its purpose or technical specifications.
The US defense website TWZ first publicly identified the aircraft in satellite imagery from May last year. The images showed the Malan test complex in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The drone's estimated wingspan is about 52 meters, comparable to that of the US B-2 low-observable bomber.

Likely purpose
In Rupprecht's view, the WZ-X is being developed as an intercontinental, high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft for reconnaissance and surveillance. The aircraft may also serve as a communications relay node. The expert compared its likely mission with that of the US RQ-180, but stressed that this comparison concerns expected tasks and a possible sensor suite, rather than confirmed flight characteristics.
Michael Bosack, director of the Parley Policy Institute, considers the WZ-X a strategic high-altitude reconnaissance platform. In his assessment, large drones of this class may be faster, carry more intelligence-gathering equipment and operate at altitudes that make them harder to detect and intercept with traditional air defense systems. At the same time, the aircraft's practical value will depend on its sensors, other payloads and China's ability to rapidly and securely transmit large volumes of data.
Potential areas of deployment
Rupprecht described Malan as China's main testing center for unmanned systems. Open-source research links the facility to the 178th UAV Brigade of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force. In Rupprecht's assessment, western China may serve both as a testing area and as an environment for evaluating the drone in scenarios related to India.
Analysts cite the South China Sea, waters near Japan and the Korean Peninsula, as well as the eastern Pacific Ocean, among the possible areas of operation. Tate Nurkin, founder of OTH Intelligence Group, believes the WZ-X may primarily be a platform for large-scale maritime surveillance, target identification and tracking, and data relay, rather than a strike drone.
