Qaidam Planet Challenge held in China’s Gobi Desert
The Qaidam Planet Challenge orienteering competition was held in Lenghu, Mangya City, in China’s Qinghai Province. As ECNS reports, the event combined technology, science fiction, sports and environmental themes. The competition took place in the Gobi Desert of the Qaidam Basin, whose landscape the publication describes as resembling that of Mars.
Route through the desert
The program included cross-country running, independent driving of vehicles in the desert and intensive team interaction. On average, participants covered 27 kilometers on foot and more than 250 kilometers by vehicle.

The 14-hour endurance race passed through the Eboliang Yardang formation, Mars No. 1 Highway and the Lenghu astronomical observation base. At the base, participants had access to the “Mozi” telescope.
Concerts and drones
New elements of this year’s program included original science-fiction-style visuals, open-air concerts and drone shows. The organizers said they aim to transform the region’s natural and scientific resources into interactive cultural and tourism projects, as well as promote the development of the local cultural and tourism industry.
