Nearly 1,700 flights have been canceled in China due to the approach of Typhoon "Dolphin"
China's east coast is preparing for the approach of Typhoon "Dolphin," which is forecast to is expected to make landfall in Zhejiang Province or neighboring Fujian late Sunday or early Monday. On Sunday morning, China’s National Meteorological Center issued a red typhoon warning—the highest danger level.
Nearly 1,400 flights have been canceled at Shanghai’s two main passenger airports, state-run CCTV reported. Another 270 arriving and departing flights were canceled at Hangzhou Airport in Zhejiang Province. Train service was also suspended in some affected areas for safety reasons.
The National Meteorological Center is forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in parts of central and eastern Zhejiang. Heavy rainfall is also expected through Monday afternoon in Shanghai and parts of Fujian, Anhui, and Jiangsu provinces. After making landfall, the typhoon is forecast to weaken as it moves northwestward across eastern China.

In Fujian, nearly 99,000 people had been evacuated from dangerous areas by Saturday evening, Xinhua reported. In Zhejiang and Fujian, service was suspended on more than 200 ferry routes. Work on marine projects was halted, and 474 construction vessels were ordered to return to port by Friday morning.
Prior to this, “Dolphin” brought heavy rains and gusty winds to Okinawa, Japan, where seven people sustained minor injuries. As of Sunday afternoon, 5,290 households there remained without power. In Taiwan, more than 180 flights were canceled and dozens of ferry trips were suspended due to the storm.
The typhoon is approaching China two weeks after Typhoon “Noul,” which struck the southern province of Guangdong. Prior to that, “Noul” claimed the lives of three people in the Philippines and damaged hundreds of homes.
