China opens country's first barbecue college

The city of Yiyang in Hunan province has launched China’s first industry-specific barbecue college. The institution was established collaboratively by Yiyang Open University and the city’s Barbecue Association to support and promote local culinary traditions.

The program targets young people interested in mastering the skills of barbecue preparation, catering, and restaurant management. Students will combine practical experience with academic qualifications to help expand Yiyang barbecue beyond the province and China's borders. Three specialized textbooks have been developed for the curriculum, and over 30 experienced Chinese masters will teach at the college. Graduates will receive a bachelor's degree as well as a culinary certificate specializing in barbecue.

The college is expected to boost professional development among chefs and stimulate gastronomic tourism in the region, enhancing barbecue’s reputation as a cultural heritage of Yiyang.
