South Korea has not ruled out Iran's involvement in the attack on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz — Yonhap

South Korea has not ruled out Iran's involvement in the attack on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz — Yonhap

A senior official at South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the likelihood of anyone other than Iranian actors being involved in the attack on the HMM Namu is extremely low.

This was reported by Yonhap.

Currently, Seoul is focusing its efforts on gathering irrefutable evidence to confirm the theory that the Panama-flagged cargo ship was struck from the outside.

The incident occurred on May 4 in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, where the cargo ship was attacked by two unidentified flying objects.

“There may still be a possibility of a party other than Iran, but common sense suggests that it is low. There were no pirates in the vicinity,” a representative of the South Korean Foreign Ministry emphasized.

To conduct a scientific investigation and determine the causes of the explosion, the South Korean government sent a team of 10 leading technical experts to Dubai.

The team includes specialists in missile weapons and drones, who will examine the nature of the hull damage and collect shell fragments for detailed analysis.

This attack marks the 33rd incident involving an attack on a civilian vessel in the region since the escalation of the conflict between the U.S. and Iran in early 2026.

Seoul is closely studying other countries’ experiences in responding to similar incidents and is preparing appropriate diplomatic measures to be implemented after the official release of the investigation’s findings.

The South Korean side expects an “appropriate response” from official Tehran if the involvement of Iranian forces is definitively confirmed by laboratory tests.

The attack on the HMM Co. vessel caused a significant hole in the stern, but all 24 crew members, including six South Korean citizens, remained safe.

The Strait of Hormuz has once again come to a near standstill

The U.S. military also struck the Touska, a ship flying the Iranian flag that was attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz despite the blockade.
