Kosovo urged to take urgent action after two femicides in a week

In Kosovo, two femicides within a week at the end of August prompted calls to treat gender-based violence as a nationwide emergency. According to Balkan Insight, both women were allegedly killed by their husbands.

Two victims at the end of August

The first victim was 25 years old and pregnant. The woman was shot. The second victim was 80 years old; according to the publication, she was beaten to death. Both cases occurred at the end of August.

Response from the acting president

Kosovo’s acting president, Albulena Haxhiu, responded to the killings in a Facebook post. She called for the “harshest punishment” and said that cases of killings and violence against women cannot be regarded as isolated incidents.

Haxhiu also stressed that the life and dignity of every woman must be protected by all possible means. A few days after one of the killings, a march against gender-based violence was held in Pristina, attended by relatives of the murdered woman.
