Man dies during building demolition in Lagos
A building collapsed during the manual demolition of a two-storey structure in the Aboru area of Lagos, Nigeria. One man died and two others were rescued from the rubble, Premium Times Nigeria reports, citing the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
Rescue operation
The building at 42 Governors Road in Aboru, in the Alimosho Local Government Area, collapsed at about midnight while workers were dismantling the structure. The agency’s permanent secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the Alpha Eagle response team from the Cappa, Oshodi unit was dispatched to the scene after an emergency report was received at 00:56.
According to him, rescuers found workers trapped beneath the debris upon arrival and began a search-and-rescue operation. Two adult men were pulled from the rubble alive, while another adult man was found dead.

Assistance to victims
Lagos State Ambulance Service personnel provided first aid to the rescued men and transported them to the nearest medical facility. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and ambulance service also took part in the operation. The area around the collapse site was cordoned off to allow emergency services to work safely.
Demolition approval
Lagos regulations require residents and developers to notify the Lagos State Building Control Agency before carrying out demolition work. However, at the time of publication, it was unknown whether the demolition of the building on Governors Road had the required approval or regulatory oversight. Oke-Osanyintolu urged compliance with building regulations and the engagement of certified professionals for demolition and construction work.
