In South Korea, prosecutors seek three years in prison in workplace bullying case

In South Korea, prosecutors have asked the Suwon District Court to sentence a man in his 40s to three years in prison. He is accused of harassment and physical violence against a younger female colleague. The 25-year-old employee, surnamed Bang, later died by suicide. This was reported by The Korea Herald.

The prosecution’s position

Prosecutors told the Suwon District Court in Gyeonggi Province that the defendant used his higher position at the company and caused significant psychological harm to the employee.

According to prosecutors, the man initially told investigators that there had been no physical contact with the employee. He later admitted in court that there had been contact, but described it as unintentional. The defendant denies criminal intent and claims that his actions were jokes allegedly intended to help the employee feel more comfortable.

Complaints and investigation

According to the publication, Bang left records of the harassment in KakaoTalk. She also kept photos of her face showing bruising on her nose, which she said resulted from the defendant’s actions. The man reportedly may have subjected her to physical and verbal abuse, including using profanity.

The employee appealed to labor authorities, but they recognized only some of her complaints and did not require the company to separate her from the defendant. She also filed a report with the police. According to local media reports, investigators questioned the man only two months after Bang’s death in December 2024.

Police initially closed the case due to insufficient evidence. After a complaint from the deceased woman’s family, prosecutors conducted an additional investigation and charged the man.
