Latvia plans to adapt drone-based emergency alerts to real-world conditions — Delfi

Latvia plans to review its approach to assessing the threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles.

This was announced by Arvis Zile, head of the Crisis Management Center (KVC), according to Delfi.

The main goal of the changes is to ensure that public alerts are proportionate to the actual danger and to minimize the impact on citizens’ daily lives.

The official noted that the country needs to review the current “threat levels” within the civil alert system.

Modern algorithms require adaptation to new geopolitical realities. This is due to the fact that drones detected near the eastern borders are increasingly becoming the cause of large-scale air raid alerts.

Arvis Zile acknowledged that the repeated alarms that sounded on Tuesday afternoon had a significant impact on the country’s daily life. That is why instructions for the public and risk assessments need to be updated promptly.

The new rules will help avoid unnecessary disruptions to the educational process, public transportation, and business operations.

The head of the Crisis Management Center has not yet disclosed the exact details of the upcoming changes. However, he emphasized that the first working meeting on this matter is already scheduled for Wednesday.

Relevant agencies are working to find and implement an effective solution as quickly as possible.

At the same time, officials are urging citizens not to take the situation lightly.

Arvis Zile emphasized that the threat posed by stray UAVs cannot be underestimated, as they carry a significant explosive payload and have the potential to cause extensive damage.

The problem requires a comprehensive and balanced solution.
