In Myanmar, death sentences have been commuted to life imprisonment

Myanmar’s leader, Min Aung Hlaing, issued a general order commuting all death sentences to life imprisonment.

This was reported by RFI.

The document states that all those sentenced to death will receive life imprisonment; the specific names of the prisoners were not disclosed.

The decision was made as part of an amnesty marking the New Year of Thingyan.

The authorities also announced the planned release of more than 4,300 prisoners, the commutation of sentences for 179 foreigners, and a reduction of prison terms by one-sixth for sentences of up to 40 years.

The military junta seized power in Myanmar in 2021 and subsequently reinstated death sentences that had not been carried out for years. According to human rights activists, the crackdown is primarily directed against opponents of the regime.

The UN estimates that over 130 people have been sentenced to death, and more than 30,000 people have been detained for political reasons since the coup.

Human rights organizations describe such amnesties as largely symbolic gestures that do not alter the overall nature of the country’s repressive policies.

Earlier, China carried out the death sentence against 11 members of the Min family, who were found guilty of running a large-scale network of fraudulent call centers in Myanmar.
