The son of an Arab sheikh was arrested in Munich for fraud in Spanish soccer

Rakan Al-Thani—the son of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani, the former owner of the Spanish soccer club Málaga—was detained at Munich Airport. He had planned to fly to Doha, but was detained under a European arrest warrant and taken into custody.

Now German authorities must decide whether to extradite him to Spain.

Rakan Al-Thani, his father, and two brothers are defendants in a case involving alleged financial irregularities during their management of Málaga. Among other things, investigators accuse them of embezzlement, mismanagement, and making corporate decisions that were detrimental to the club.

In July, a Spanish court issued European and international arrest warrants for the family members after repeated attempts to summon them to court had failed.

The Spanish prosecutor’s office is seeking a 14-year prison sentence for each family member and a 18-year ban on managing companies.

Rakan Al-Thani was a member of Málaga’s board of directors. In 2020, a court removed the Al-Thani family from the club’s management amid an investigation into possible financial irregularities.
