Nigeria to add data on attacks against journalists to NHRC dashboard — Premium Times Nigeria
In Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) signed a three-year memorandum of understanding on press freedom and journalists’ safety. According to Premium Times Nigeria, the agreement provides for the inclusion of verified data from CJID’s Press Attack Tracker in the NHRC’s monthly human rights monitoring dashboard.
The document was signed on September 18, 2026, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. The cooperation also covers monitoring violations of press freedom, joint advocacy, professional skills development, awareness-raising and other human rights initiatives.
Cooperation between CJID and NHRC
At the event, NHRC Executive Secretary Tony Ojukwu was represented by Rabi Anwar, Director of Legal Services and Enforcement. She stated that the partnership aligns with the commission’s legally defined mandate to safeguard the rights of Nigerian citizens and other persons in the country.

The CJID delegation was led by its Director of Operations, Adebimpe Abodunde. According to her, the agreement is intended to help link the documentation of press freedom violations more directly with the commission’s human rights mandate.
Press Attack Tracker
CJID launched the Press Attack Tracker in 2017 to document, verify and analyse attacks against journalists and violations of press freedom. Its database contains 1,899 verified cases, while historical records cover the period since 1986. The data concern five West African countries.
According to CJID, the tracker records cases of attacks, arrests, threats, harassment and obstruction of journalists’ work. The organisation also plans to introduce a separate nomination for coverage of press freedom and human rights issues as part of the annual CJID Excellence in Journalism Awards.
