Moldova has warned of the risk of fatal incidents involving drones
Moldovan Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii stated that the country cannot rule out the possibility of future casualties due to crashes or other incidents involving Russian drones. According to him, as long as Russia continues its war against Ukraine, the consequences of these attacks could extend to neighboring countries. At the same time, Moldova currently lacks sufficient means to defend itself against such threats.
The defense minister’s statement came after several incidents involving Russian drones on Moldovan territory. Nosaty warned that the situation could become more dangerous if Russian drones continue to enter the country’s airspace. “We cannot rule out fatalities in the near future,” said Anatoliy Nosaty.
According to him, the risk is directly linked to Russia’s war against Ukraine. The minister emphasized that Russian attacks are directed not only at military targets but also at civilian infrastructure and populated areas. “As long as the war continues and Russia attacks civilian targets and kills people in Ukraine, these consequences could spread to other countries located near the combat zone,” Nosaty said.
Moldova Faces Challenges in Defending Against Drones
The minister also acknowledged that Moldova currently lacks sufficient capabilities to counter such threats. The situation is particularly challenging with regard to the modern drones that Russia is using in the war against Ukraine. According to Nosatyi, the country needs to strengthen the protection of its airspace. This involves not only means of detecting drones but also the ability to respond quickly to such incursions.
Moldova has repeatedly recorded instances where drones linked to Russian attacks on Ukraine have been detected near or directly within its territory. Such incidents pose additional risks to people and infrastructure.
The country still lacks a warning system for such threats
Nosatyi cited the lack of a comprehensive public warning system in the event of such threats as another problem. If a dangerous drone appears in the country’s airspace, people need to be notified of the danger as quickly as possible. This is especially important for areas located near the Ukrainian border.
The minister believes that Moldova should invest in such systems as soon as possible. This would not only allow for faster detection of threats but also warn civilians of potential danger. Nosati effectively warned that the risk to Moldova will persist as long as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues. However, he did not claim that casualties were inevitable; rather, he spoke specifically about the possible course of events resulting from further incidents involving drones. Moldova strongly condemned yet another Russian attack on Ukraine near the Moldovan border. Specifically, the Ukrainian “Starokozache” border crossing was struck, resulting in fatalities and injuries, including among Ukrainian border guards.
