In Nigeria, LP says Abayomi Arabambi is no longer a party member
In Nigeria, the Labour Party (LP) has stated that its former spokesperson, Abayomi Arabambi, is no longer a member of the political force. The statement came after his lawsuit against the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and the institution’s vice-chancellor over an alleged refusal to provide information about Peter Obi’s academic documents.
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, LP spokesperson Ken Asogwa said Arabambi was among 25 members whose membership was suspended by the party’s National Executive Committee in March over alleged anti-party activities.
The party’s position
According to Asogwa, the LP national convention on April 28 ratified this decision, after which these individuals ceased to be party members. He also said that no LP body had reviewed or overturned the decision concerning the expelled members.
The party representative noted that Arabambi is not authorized to act as an LP official or representative. Asogwa added that the party’s lawyers are considering possible legal action against Arabambi and an appeal to law enforcement agencies. These statements reflect LP’s position regarding the status of its former spokesperson.

Lawsuit over Obi’s documents
The lawsuit lists the UNN vice-chancellor as the first respondent and the university as the second. Arabambi claims that he requested a certified copy of Peter Obi’s diploma numbered D000198 — a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy issued in 1984.
According to the claimant, he submitted the request under Nigeria’s Freedom of Information Act, but the university refused to provide the document. Arabambi asks the court to compel the respondents to consider and respond to his July 16 request in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2011.
Peter Obi graduated from UNN in 1984. In the 2023 presidential election, he was LP’s candidate, and shortly after the general elections he left the party, citing an acute crisis in its leadership. He is currently, according to the publication, a presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
