Nigeria to screen film on local government accountability — Premium Times Nigeria

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and DevReporting will hold the premiere of the documentary LG Billions in the Dark on local government administration in Osun State on October 29 in Akoka, Nigeria. Premium Times Nigeria reports.

The film examines Osun State in southwestern Nigeria as a case study for analysing public finance management, the provision of services to residents, and public accountability of local authorities.

Premiere and foundation launch

The event at UNILAG will also include the launch of the Development Reporting Africa Foundation (DRAF) and fundraising. DevReporting announced the upcoming event during a visit to the university’s management.

DevReporting Managing Editor Christiana Alabi-Akande said the documentary is intended not only to tell the story of Osun State but also to stimulate a broader national discussion about the state of local governance. According to her, citizens and institutions must demand accountability.

Academic community participation

DevReporting Deputy Editor Samson Ademola explained the choice of UNILAG as the venue by saying that local authorities receive less public attention than the federal and state governments, even though they are closest to citizens. According to him, the involvement of students and the academic community should help improve understanding of local governance issues and support demands for transparency.

The documentary project is being implemented in partnership with the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development through its Local Media Sustainability Fund, with support from the Embassy of Norway. UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Folasade Ogunsola supported the initiative and said the university is looking forward to the film screening and the launch of DRAF.
