Woman detained in Nigeria on suspicion of abusing her 7-year-old daughter
In the community of Obosi in Anambra State, Nigeria, 32-year-old Ogechi Ofoma was detained on suspicion of cruel treatment of her seven-year-old daughter. As Premium Times Nigeria reports, citing state police, the child sustained serious bodily injuries.
Police statement
State police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said law enforcement received a report about the case on September 13. According to preliminary police information, the girl may have been subjected to severe physical violence, including injuries that were likely inflicted with a hot knife.
According to Ikenga, the incident occurred in Obosi, in the Idemili North local government area. The child was rescued by officers of the Ibollo community security service in Awada-Obosi together with concerned local residents. Their intervention also made it possible to initiate police action, the spokesperson added.

Assistance for the child and investigation
State police condemned the alleged violence and said they intended to seek accountability for those responsible. State Commissioner of Police Nnanna Ama began cooperating with the State Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare, Chinyere Onyekezi.
According to police, this cooperation is intended to provide the child with urgent medical care, protection, and necessary social support. Police also promised to conduct a thorough, professional, and uncompromising investigation.
