Berlin Airport and Munich Transport Halted Due to Strikes
At Berlin Airport, 445 flights have been canceled due to a strike by the Ver.di union, affecting approximately 57,000 passengers, Spiegel reports.
Since the start of 18 March, the airport has neither received nor dispatched flights because of the warning strike. Travelers were advised to contact their airlines for alternative travel options or rebookings.
The strike comes amid ongoing disputes over labor contracts between the union and the airport operator, FBB. Last week, employers presented their initial offer, which the union deemed unsatisfactory. Ver.di is demanding a 6% wage increase for about 2,000 employees and additional days off.
In Munich, public transport disruptions are also expected. The strike avoids the morning rush hours, but from 09:00 some metro and tram services will be suspended, with the main phase starting at 11:00 affecting all forms of city transport. Regional trains and buses will operate as usual.
On Thursday, the strike is planned to continue in Munich and expand to several cities in Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Hamburg.
Previously, all flights at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, serving the German capital and surrounding regions, were canceled due to a Ver.di strike, temporarily halting airport operations and flight movements. Earlier reports noted that Cologne Airport temporarily suspended flights due to a security system malfunction.
