German police suspect attempted sabotage near substation in Dormagen

German police are investigating a possible sabotage attempt after a suspicious device was found near an electrical substation in the city of Dormagen between Cologne and Düsseldorf. As Deutsche Welle reports, the object was found by a passerby late on Thursday evening.

Suspicion of a short circuit

A Cologne police spokesperson told AFP that someone had probably tried to deliberately cause a short circuit. According to the spokesperson, the object found may have been a suspicious launching device.

The Bild newspaper reported that homemade rockets with launching devices, timers and copper wires were allegedly found at the site. Police did not confirm this information.

Other incidents this week

The incident in Dormagen was another this week that law enforcement authorities are considering as a possible attempt to damage critical infrastructure. On Tuesday, improvised projectiles resembling New Year's pyrotechnics were found near the Jänschwalde coal-fired power plant in the state of Brandenburg. They could have thrown a grounding wire over high-voltage lines and caused a short circuit.

The following day, similar objects were found near a power plant in Bergheim, North Rhine-Westphalia. No significant damage was recorded in any of these cases, and police did not report any suspects. According to Bild, on Friday police were also investigating the discovery of suspicious objects near an electrical substation close to Ganderkesee in Lower Saxony; no details were reported at the time.
