The number of Ukrainian men of draft age is growing in Germany
Germany is seeing a sharp increase in the number of Ukrainian men of draft age. This is evidenced by data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) provided to the RND news outlet. The agency is tracking this trend against the backdrop of the overall migration flow from Ukraine.
As of May 30, there were a total of 1.348 million refugees from Ukraine in Germany, including 356,000 men aged 18 to 63. These figures, particularly regarding the number of men among the refugees, differ significantly from last year’s figures. For example, as of March 8, 2025, there were a total of 1.254 million Ukrainians in Germany, of whom 298,000 were men.
Thus, it follows that among the approximately 95,000 people who have arrived in Germany from Ukraine since March 2025, nearly 60% are men of draft age, the report states.
As the publication notes, this picture contrasts sharply with the situation at the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, when it was primarily women with children who were leaving for Germany. In the early stages of the war, single parents and their children made up 40% of refugees from Ukraine, which was five times higher than the average rate of such parents in the general population of Germany.
The publication notes that as of August 2025, Ukrainian men aged 18–22 have once again been able to leave Ukraine without restrictions. Consequently, Germany is now discussing a revision of the rules for granting asylum to refugees from Ukraine, particularly regarding the termination of the provision that automatically grants protected status to Ukrainian men of draft age.
Similarly, the European Union is considering the possibility of introducing the standard asylum procedure for Ukrainian men aged 23 to 60, which would significantly reduce their chances of obtaining asylum in EU member states, writes DW.
