Two arrested, three killed in South Africa after police officers’ murder — TimesLIVE
In Libode near Mthatha, South Africa, police arrested two people, while three other suspects were killed during an operation to find those involved in the murder of two law enforcement officers. This was reported by TimesLIVE, citing Eastern Cape police.
Deaths of law enforcement officers
According to police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana, the 72-hour operation was launched after the deaths on Friday morning of 51-year-old warrant officer Tando Magokso and 30-year-old constable Ntlahla Tyali. The officers responded to a call after armed men attacked a spaza shop in the Zifunzana area and demanded money from the owner.
During the attack, the officers’ service pistols were stolen. Police are investigating, among other offences, an attack on law enforcement officers, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Arrests and seized weapons
On Friday, officers from Mthatha criminal intelligence and the canine unit arrested a 29-year-old woman and man in the Ngolo area of Sibangweni. According to police, an AK-47 rifle and ammunition were found in their possession. They may face charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Later the same day, at about 23:55, the national intervention unit was following up information about another suspect on the N2 highway in the Sibangweni area of Libode, in the direction of Tsolo. According to police, the 35-year-old man opened fire on officers, who returned fire. The man sustained fatal injuries, and a pistol with three rounds was seized at the scene.
Two more men whom police link to the case involving the murder of the law enforcement officers sustained fatal injuries during further operations in Ngolo village. Two pistols were seized from them. Overall, police reported the seizure of one AK-47 rifle and three pistols in connection with the case. Dockets have also been opened to investigate the circumstances of the deaths of the three suspects.
