Former Netanyahu adviser describes AI’s role in the IDF — Jerusalem Post
In Israel, Jacob Nagel, a former national security adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said that artificial intelligence in Israel Defense Forces systems can process data and provide recommendations, but decisions concerning human lives must be made by people. He wrote this in a column for the Jerusalem Post.
Nagel mentioned the film “The Causality of War.” According to the columnist’s description, the film accuses Israel of genocide and disregard for human lives in the Gaza Strip, and allegedly links AI to fire direction and indiscriminate harm to civilians. Nagel noted that he had not watched the film himself.
AI in intelligence
In Nagel’s view, AI can speed up the analysis of large volumes of textual, audio and visual information, detect weak signals and gaps in intelligence assessments. He also believes that such systems can help identify the enemy and generate potential targets.

At the same time, the author claims that algorithms do not make decisions on carrying out strikes. According to him, military procedures prohibit relying exclusively on AI in situations involving human lives. If intelligence may lead to an attack, target identification, Nagel claims, must be confirmed by at least two separate indicators from independent sources, while the final decision is made by an authorized person.
Development and cybersecurity
In the column, Nagel also described AI capabilities for writing code for military systems, navigation, robotic platforms and detecting cybersecurity vulnerabilities. He stressed that software created with the help of AI requires thorough professional and human review before integration into operational systems.
The author called AI models a strategic national resource and raised the issue of Israel’s technological independence in the civilian and military sectors. He noted that the IDF’s “Alonim” and “Bareket” programs are intended to train specialists for data science projects.
